With concerts, comedy, walks, talks, films and more, the Hitchin Festival is the highlight of the year for this Hertfordshire town. Other events in the town over the year include the pancake fayre, races in aid of a local hospice, the Vaisakhi Procession and the St George’s Day Parade. Proud of their 70 unique eateries and 90 independent retailers, an independent shop and eat guide was recently produced. Speciality shopping street days (Bucklersbury Day, Hermitage Road Weekend) are also organised, including events, discounts, live music and family activities, which improve customer relations and awareness of specific areas of town. Hitchin became the first town in Hertfordshire to achieve Fairtrade town status in 2006. Paper and cardboard is recycled for over 200 businesses, there’s a bi-annual litter pick, and Hitchin BID is working with a not for profit organisation on increasing recycling provisions and becoming plastic free. Recently launching a new innovative recycling scheme where the town centre rangers collect used coffee ground from businesses, send them off to a recycling centre where they’re made in brisket logs for wood burners and stoves. Coffee logs can be purchased (at wholesale price) by local businesses to sell in store and make a profit. The Hitchin BID also recently introduced a new website which includes events, business listings, Hitchin information, latest news and parking facilities. Additionally, promotion of: events, local businesses and the work undertaken by the rangers is done using a number of social media channels operated by the organisation.
