Following the great success of 2018, the Great British High Street Awards returned in 2019. Continuing the proud partnership with Visa, this year’s Awards saw some fantastic entries from all around the UK and celebrated the great work of small businesses and local communities in creating vibrant and dynamic high streets.
On 23rd May 2019, the Great British High Street Awards were launched across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In August, 40 high streets across the four nations were shortlisted in the Champion High Street Award and the Rising Star High Street Award categories, celebrating the high streets that are succeeding and influencing change. Shortlisted high streets were eligible to win up to £15,000 for a local community initiative or sustainability programme.
The judges and Visa ambassadors for the Great British High Street Awards travelled the length and breadth of the UK visiting all the shortlisted high streets. Each high street was judged against four success pillars of community: customer experience, digital transformation, environment and innovation. The judges’ scores were combined with public votes submitted on the Great British High Street website.
The winners were announced at the Awards Ceremony in Edinburgh on the 23rd January 2020. A Champion and Rising Star High Street were named for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Kelso, Scotland took home the title of the Rising Star of the Year 2019 and Treorchy, Wales was crowned the High Street of the Year 2019. We also named four High Street Heroes – those exceptional independent business owners or employees who have gone above and beyond for their local high street.
