Located between Belfast and Dublin, Newry has taken proactive steps to improve its high street. A ‘Digital Stakeholder Engagement’ event organised in collaboration with Ulster University asked over 100 local businesses and community groups to give their feedback on the state of the high street. Newry has provided over 70 free training courses, launched a mystery shopping scheme (with 25 businesses achieving world class scores) and cleaned over 100 instances of graffiti in the town centre. Newry has been proud to host events including a racing car visit, a traditional music festival, fun runs and a tourist centred cycle which attracted 500 visitors. Newry was also a key partner in securing UK and Ireland Pride. Digital schemes include VIP Newry Shopper (a text loyalty scheme), free E Commerce Cyber Security and GDPR training courses for merchants and there is also an effort to bring fast WiFi to the high street.
