Eleven new businesses have opened in Wellington since January, and there’s community spirit in abundance. A former vacant bank on the high street, is now a council, community and church funded cinema, café and arts venue; bringing culture back to the heart of town.
To attract new businesses, an Empty Shop Grant scheme has seen £60k of grants awarded to restaurants, bakeries and businesses, which in turn has increased footfall and provided employment.
Other initiatives include a 'Makers Dozen Mural Trail' (paintings of windows around the town depicting and celebrating Wellington's heritage), the Friends of Wellington Station, whose volunteers plant station wasteland with lavender beds, and a 'Peace Garden.’ There are also communities organising local litter picks, improving wildlife habitats, and offering free Tai Chi, yoga and bowls in the park. Engagement with businesses helps them enhance their online presence, through positive use of social media, embracing the latest payment technology and a Love Wellington App which is in the pipeline, as well as digital signage already in use under the community clock.
